the reading warrior's BOOK CLUB

DISCIPLING A GENERATION OF YOUNG CHILDREN; FANNING INTO FLAME A PASSION FOR READING; POSITIONING THEM TO DISCOVER TRUTH.
WHY IS READING SO IMPORTANT.
Let’s face it, there’s an all out battle for our kid’s heart and attention. As our society advances deeper into the era of technology (or the technological revolution), the complexity of raising children with ability to think critically and imaginatively has become increasingly difficult. We want everything to be consumed in 10 seconds or less. Maintaining a healthy imagination is such a necessity to our overall health and productivity…probably much more than we realize. Some of the greatest minds and talents across the globe have leveraged their imaginations as a central component to the success they achieved. Much of their ability to imagine “something greater” for themselves and others around them came through the conduit of reading. One cannot overlook the power of the imagination and critical thinking through reading upon a child’s life. When joyful reading is present, a child is shown to possess a broader worldview; enabling them to travel the difficult terrains of life with confidence.

WHAT IS A READING WARRIOR?
As a pastor (and previously high school teacher), joyful reading and critical thinking have been cornerstones within my life. Through reading, entire galaxies of understanding have been opened to me. In fact, one of the greatest areas of understanding a person can have is about their faith....discovering what is true for themselves...and staking their entire life upon it. I decided early on—not to only encourage reading within my home, but to raise what I call Reading Warriors.

Reading Warrior's are passionate young kids learning to ENJOY the art of “story” through reading and critical thinking within quiet environments; positioned to understand greater truth within their lives for years to come.

Now the keyword is learning. Some kids take to reading more naturally than others. But all kids can learn, over time, to find joy in the art. It’s just a matter of time, patience, repetition, ideal environments, and most importantly “interest category.”

FEATURED BOOK SERIES.
Young kids love grandiose stories where their imaginations can truly run wild. Stories of mystery and intrigue. This summer the book series of choice is called, “The Boxcar Children”; a nationwide classic that has stood the test of time; capturing children’s hearts for more than two decades. It’s a safe, theme appropriate, non-fiction series about four orphaned siblings who band together to figure out life and the many mysteries around them. I have personally read more than 30 books within the series myself and can’t wait to share it with some more young reading warriors. As a child, it was through this book series that my passion for reading was ignited. Over the course of 10 book club meetings, we will go on a journey with the boxcar children; dividing our time between following along with an audiobook, reading out loud, and following up with reading at home. On the last day of the book club, we watch the boxcar children movie with popcorn and ice cream! Each kid who completes all the reading will receive an official Reading Warriors Book Club Certificate of Completion!
THE BIG SECRET.
My primary aim for raising Reading Warriors within my own home is to position them to learn the truth about their faith. The primary way we meet God is through words. It is His intended delivery system by which He reveals Himself. Get it? The Creator of the entire universe...with limitless power—chose to reveal Himself primarily through words. That’s incredible! Though the Boxcar Children mystery series is not Christian nonfiction, there are many biblical principles I will help your child discover through our reading club. But right now, what’s most important—is for them to have a passion for reading. The more they read the more they will comprehend. The more they comprehend the better they will be able to handle God’s word. God’s word is a story. Story in and of itself is an artform. As your child learns how to better interact with the category of story, they will be positioned to interact with the greatest story of all time.
